Pet Carrier Wholesale FAQ

Practical answers for importers, retailers and pet brands sourcing soft-sided carriers, backpacks, totes and sling carriers.

What does “airline approved pet carrier” actually mean?

There is no universal certification called an “airline-approved pet carrier.” IATA does not certify, approve, endorse, or sell commercial dog or cat travel containers. Instead, it publishes requirements and guidance for animal transport containers, while individual airlines set their own policies for pets travelling in the cabin.

For buyers developing soft-sided carriers for air travel, the better approach is to define the target airlines and external carrier dimensions rather than relying on an “airline approved” claim. Under-seat space and airline policies can vary, and the carrier must still provide adequate space, ventilation, security, and containment for the animal. A compressible soft-sided structure can improve under-seat compatibility, but compression should not obstruct ventilation openings. For multi-market programmes, we recommend checking the intended airlines before finalising the carrier pattern and packaging claims.

Do you supply hard-sided IATA crates for cargo transport?

No. Calfei specialises in soft-sided pet carriers, backpacks, totes, and sling-style carriers for everyday and in-cabin transport rather than rigid cargo crates. Animals transported in an aircraft hold or as air cargo may be subject to IATA Live Animals Regulations and additional airline requirements covering container construction, ventilation, security, dimensions, and animal welfare. The 2026 edition of the IATA Live Animals Regulations is currently in effect.

Buyers sourcing containers specifically for cargo transport should select products against the applicable IATA container requirements and the operating airline’s rules. If your programme requires both soft carriers and rigid transport crates, we can help clarify the product split, but rigid crates should be sourced from a manufacturer specialising in that construction.

What pet carrier dimensions should I specify for the US, UK, and EU markets?

There is no single soft-carrier dimension that is guaranteed to meet every US, UK, and EU airline’s requirements. Airlines maintain their own pet policies, and available under-seat space can also vary by aircraft and seat configuration. IATA therefore recommends checking directly with the selected airline rather than relying on a universal carrier size.

For wholesale programmes, we normally work backwards from the buyer’s target market and intended airlines before finalising the external dimensions. Soft-sided construction can provide some flexibility because the top and side panels may compress slightly, but this should not reduce ventilation or leave the animal without adequate internal space. If one SKU is intended for several markets, we recommend checking the more restrictive target airlines during product development rather than labelling a generic size as universally suitable for air travel.

How should pet carrier sizes map to pet weight?

Pet carrier sizing should be based on both the animal’s dimensions and the carrier’s tested load capacity, not body weight alone. Two animals of the same weight can require very different carrier sizes. A long-bodied cat, for example, may need more internal length than a compact dog at the same weight. IATA guidance also considers whether the animal can stand, sit, turn around, and lie in a natural position when determining appropriate container dimensions.

From a product-engineering perspective, load capacity depends on the complete construction — particularly the base board, webbing, handles or shoulder straps, attachment points, and seams — rather than the shell fabric alone. For this reason, we recommend giving retail customers both internal carrier dimensions and a tested maximum load instead of relying only on S/M/L labels.

What are the main failure points in a soft-sided pet carrier?

Zipper security, base support, mesh durability, and strap attachment are four of the most important failure points to evaluate in a soft-sided carrier. A zipper that can be pushed apart from inside creates an escape risk. Depending on the design, double-pull sliders can therefore be paired with a locking feature, clip, or attachment point to reduce accidental opening. Base construction is another critical area. A removable EVA or PE board provides more predictable support than relying only on stiffened fabric.

Mesh panels should also be evaluated where they join webbing or binding, because concentrated pulling or scratching can damage weak seams even when the mesh itself remains intact. For backpacks and shoulder carriers, the webbing-to-body attachment points deserve particular attention because they carry the loaded weight of both the carrier and the animal. These construction points should be defined in the product specification or purchase order rather than left under a generic description such as “standard quality.”

What materials and frame construction are available for soft pet carriers?

Common carrier constructions use polyester Oxford fabric, breathable mesh panels, structural base boards, webbing, and removable interior mats, with the exact specification depending on the intended price point and use case. Typical shell options include 600D and 900D polyester Oxford, with PU-coated fabrics available where additional water resistance is required. Structure can be created in several ways. Soft tote-style carriers may rely primarily on an EVA or PE base board, while more structured designs can use wire framing or removable rods to help the carrier maintain its shape.

Interior comfort pads can be made removable for easier cleaning, and different mesh densities, lining materials, webbing widths, hardware, and zipper specifications can be selected during development. Recycled polyester options can also be discussed for programmes with specific material requirements. Any recycled-content or sustainability claim should be supported by the material documentation required by the buyer.

What quality checks should be performed on pet carriers?

Carrier inspection should focus on load-bearing and escape-related components in addition to normal appearance and dimensional checks. Depending on the product specification, inspection can include base load testing, zipper operation, seam strength, mesh integrity, strap and handle attachment, dimensional tolerance, and workmanship. For production orders, pre-shipment inspection can be arranged using an agreed AQL standard, such as AQL 2.5 for major defects and AQL 4.0 for minor defects, or according to the buyer’s own inspection protocol.

We recommend defining critical construction details — particularly zipper specification, base-board material, webbing attachment, and key reinforcement points — in the approved product specification before production. Third-party inspection or laboratory testing can also be arranged through recognised providers such as SGS, Bureau Veritas, or Intertek according to the buyer’s required scope.

How does pet carrier packaging affect landed cost?

Soft pet carriers are highly sensitive to volumetric freight cost, so packed dimensions can matter more than a small difference in product weight or ex-factory price. A carrier with a rigid frame may occupy almost its full finished volume during shipping, while a collapsible construction can substantially reduce the carton cube. Nesting different sizes, folding structural panels, optimising handle position, or making selected frame components removable can improve packing efficiency without necessarily changing the carrier’s appearance when assembled.

This is particularly important for wholesale orders because a small reduction in packed volume per unit becomes significant across hundreds or thousands of carriers. For that reason, we recommend evaluating unit cost and packed CBM together, rather than comparing supplier quotations only on FOB or EXW price. Before production, Calfei can confirm the final packing method and carton dimensions so buyers can calculate freight and landed cost using the actual packed volume.

Can you prepare pet carriers for Amazon FBA?

Yes. For Amazon sellers, final packed dimensions should be considered during product development rather than after production. Amazon FBA fulfilment costs are affected by product dimensions and shipping weight, and its size-tier rules can change over time. That makes packaging design particularly important for bulky but relatively lightweight products such as soft pet carriers. Unnecessary padding, oversized retail boxes, or a carrier structure that cannot collapse efficiently can increase fulfilment and storage costs over the life of the listing.

For Amazon programmes, we can review the intended packing method before production and prepare unit and master-carton labelling according to the buyer’s current FBA requirements. Buyers should confirm the latest Amazon marketplace requirements and fee tiers before approving final packaging dimensions.

Are there patent or IP risks when sourcing pet carriers?

Pet carrier designs can involve design-patent and other intellectual-property risks when a new product closely copies the distinctive appearance or construction of an existing branded product. Expandable side structures, capsule-style windows, distinctive backpack constructions, closure systems, and other recognisable design features may warrant an IP review before tooling or production. For this reason, we do not recommend developing a new carrier simply by asking a factory to reproduce photographs taken from a competitor’s marketplace listing.

A safer development process is to identify the functional features the buyer needs — such as expansion, ventilation, foldability, visibility, or backpack conversion — and develop an original combination of proportions, panels, materials, details, and construction around those requirements. Where IP risk is material to a programme, buyers should conduct the appropriate patent or legal review before placing a production order.

What can be customised on a soft pet carrier?

Most soft-carrier programmes can be customised at several levels, from branding existing designs to developing a new structure. Common options include shell fabric, colour, mesh, lining, interior mat, webbing, zipper and hardware selection, woven labels, hang tags, packaging, logo application, and selected structural details. Logo options can include woven labels, heat transfer, embroidery, and patches depending on the material and design. MOQ depends on the level of customisation. Branding an existing construction generally requires less commitment than developing custom-dyed fabric, printed fabric, proprietary hardware, or an entirely new carrier pattern.

For new projects, we recommend separating the specification into three levels: Existing design + branding → material/colour modification → structural development.

This allows buyers to see which changes affect MOQ, sampling cost, tooling, and lead time before development begins.

How long do pet carrier samples and production take?

Lead time depends primarily on whether the project uses an existing carrier design or requires material and structural development. Stock or existing-design samples can normally be prepared faster than samples requiring custom fabric, branding, hardware, or pattern modification. Production timing should be confirmed after the sample specification is approved because carrier construction varies considerably between simple totes, structured shoulder carriers, expandable designs, and backpacks.

For customised programmes, the practical sequence is: Specification → sample → sample approval → production → inspection → shipment. Calfei confirms the sampling and production schedule against the selected design before an order is placed rather than applying one fixed lead time to every carrier style.

What compliance documents do EU and UK buyers need?

EU- and UK-bound pet carriers should be reviewed against the applicable product-safety, chemical, textile, labelling, and packaging requirements for the target market. For EU-bound products, this can include applicable GPSR obligations and REACH restrictions. Textile testing or certification, such as OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, may also be requested depending on the buyer’s programme, but should not be confused with mandatory regulatory requirements.

Our broader compliance approach is explained in detail on the Harnesses & Leashes and Quality & Compliance pages rather than duplicated here. For pet carriers specifically, buyers should remember that removable mats, padding, straps, mesh, coatings, printed components, and other materials may need to be included in the relevant testing scope depending on the requirement being assessed.
