The 2027 Chinese New Year Sourcing Calendar for Pet Product Buyers

2027 Chinese New Year sourcing calendar for pet product buyers

Chinese New Year falls on 6 February 2027. China’s official 2027 Spring Festival holiday schedule has not yet been announced, although the holiday is currently expected to fall around 5–13 February.

For buyers sourcing pet products from China, however, February is not the date you should be planning around.

For pre-CNY orders, January is the real deadline.

Factory workers begin leaving before the official holiday, production capacity gradually falls, freight space becomes tighter, and the closer a shipment gets to the holiday, the less room there is to solve a production, quality or logistics problem.

For most pet product orders that need to ship before Chinese New Year, the safest approach is to work backwards from an early-January shipping target.

A Practical 2027 CNY Sourcing Timeline

September–October 2026: Develop and approve new products

If you are developing a new pet product, September and October are the right months to complete sampling and confirm the main specifications.

This is particularly important for products involving custom fabrics, colours, dimensions, packaging, logos or structural changes.

The goal is simple: do not enter November with major product-development questions still unresolved.

For repeat products with an existing approved specification, this stage can naturally be shorter.

November–December 2026: Bulk production

Once samples and specifications are confirmed, November and December provide the main production window for pre-CNY orders.

For customised products, we prefer to have the PO and production details confirmed early enough that material preparation and bulk production do not depend on the final weeks before the holiday.

This also creates room for something buyers sometimes forget to plan for: correction.

If an inspection identifies a problem in late January, there may be very little time left to rework the goods before workers leave.

Early December: Start booking freight

Do not wait until the goods are finished before discussing the shipment.

The weeks before Chinese New Year are traditionally a busy period for exports from China. As factories across the country try to ship orders before closing, container space can become tighter and logistics schedules less flexible.

Depending on the route and market conditions, freight rates and related logistics costs may also increase as the holiday approaches.

For an order expected to finish around the end of December, early December is a sensible time to start confirming the shipping plan and reserving space with your forwarder.

Earlier shipment does not guarantee a lower freight rate, but it gives buyers more options and reduces exposure to the pre-holiday capacity squeeze.

Late December: Complete final inspection

For goods scheduled to ship in early January, final inspection should ideally be completed around the end of December.

This gives both buyer and supplier some buffer if something needs to be corrected.

Scheduling inspection on the last possible production day is risky. A failed inspection is manageable when the production team is still available. The same problem becomes much harder to solve once workers have started leaving for the holiday.

Early January 2027: Ship the goods

For pre-CNY orders, this is the target we would encourage buyers to work towards.

The safest goal is not simply to finish production before Chinese New Year. It is to have the goods inspected and shipped by early January.

There is an important difference.

Goods sitting at a factory in late January may technically be finished, but the buyer is still exposed to warehouse coordination, container availability, loading schedules and possible production corrections.

The earlier the shipment leaves, the more buffer you retain.

There can also be a cost benefit. As the holiday approaches and exporters compete for available freight capacity, shipping costs can become less predictable. Moving cargo earlier avoids depending on the most congested part of the pre-holiday logistics cycle.

Mid-January: The practical factory slowdown begins

This is where overseas buyers sometimes misunderstand the Chinese New Year calendar.

The official holiday may begin in February, but many factory workers do not wait until February to travel home.

From around mid-January, workers may begin leaving gradually, and many factories reduce production or close before the official public holiday begins.

So when a supplier says:

“Our holiday starts in February.”

that does not necessarily mean full production capacity will remain available until February.

For sourcing purposes, buyers should ask a different question:

When will your production workers begin leaving?

That answer is usually more useful than the official holiday date.

February–Early March: Reopening is gradual

Factories also do not return to full capacity on one single day.

Workers return at different times after Chinese New Year, and staffing levels vary significantly between factories. Some production sites recover quickly; others need several weeks before all lines are operating normally again.

In our own production arrangements, a relatively high proportion of local workers makes staffing more predictable than at factories that depend heavily on workers travelling long distances home.

Even so, we plan for a gradual recovery rather than assuming full production capacity immediately after the holiday.

For 2027 planning, late February should be treated as a recovery period, with more normal production expected around early March.

Why shipping earlier matters

There are three different risks to leaving a pre-CNY order too late.

Production risk: workers begin leaving and available line capacity falls.

Quality risk: there is less time to inspect, correct and re-inspect goods before shutdown.

Logistics risk: freight capacity becomes tighter, schedules become less flexible, and rates or other logistics costs may increase as more exporters compete to move cargo before the holiday.

This is why moving a production completion date forward by even one or two weeks can be valuable.

You are not only buying time.

You are buying options.

2027 Planning Checklist

For a typical pet product order intended to ship before Chinese New Year:

Timing Recommended action
Sep–Oct 2026 New product development, sampling and specification approval
Nov–Dec 2026 Bulk production
Early Dec 2026 Confirm freight plan and begin booking space
Late Dec 2026 Final inspection
Early Jan 2027 Target shipment
Mid-Jan onward Expect increasing factory disruption
February Holiday and gradual reopening
Late Feb–Early Mar Production capacity progressively returns

These dates are a planning framework rather than fixed deadlines. Lead times vary by product, materials, order quantity, customisation level and factory capacity.

For products involving new moulds, custom-developed materials or substantial structural changes, development should begin earlier.
